Red-legged Partridge

We spotted this bird sitting on our garden fence one morning earlier this week (in New Cut).  It sat there for a short while and then hopped off the fence into next-door’s garden.

Kind regards, Alison

It’s quite unusual for a Red-legged Partridge to be seen visiting a garden, and the first we’ve heard of in a Westfield garden!  Interestingly this website regards them as garden birds and gives further information. Gardens next to farmland would seem the most likely to attract this species.

Red-legged Partridge is a so-called game bird that is regularly reared in captivity by some farmers and released for shooting purposes. Unlike the Grey Partridge it is not a true native to Britain, having been first introduced from France in the 1600s. They have bred here in the wild for a very long time now though and are well established as farmland birds throughout most of Britain, but seem to have become a little scarcer in recent years.
