Breeding Ravens

As far as we know Ravens have never bred in the parish of Westfield, so when I had this message from Mick Erends I was puzzled.

Hi Dave, I bumped in to a man dredging one of the ditches below Brede Bridge and the talk came on birds. He told me that Ravens are nesting on an electricity pylon at a farm in Westfield. I cannot remember the name of the farm but he assured me that it was genuine, I don’t know if you knew this and I am wondering if it was below Cottage Lane some where?

So I decided to have a look around the area.

I visited Brede Waterworks where there are two lines of pylons, at first I thought this is not looking very positive, then after moving around the area I went to check out the pylon near a farm as I could not see it clearly from where I was checking.DSC_0784 DSC_0786 DSC_0789 DSC_0792From a distance I could not see any nest, so I thought I would take a closer look. At first there was no sign of anything, then I heard a call that I was not familiar with. Visit this web page to hear the same sound – http://birdnote.org/show/ravens-love-song
As I approached the pylon I saw a Raven fly off, and after a close look I could see a nest, not very large for a Raven I thought, but the bird flew off it. Then as I started taking these pictures there was a lot of noise from both birds. I left the site within a couple of minutes.
These Ravens are actually breeding just outside the parish, but worthy of a mention here.
Dave
